This photo was taken at the 2nd show I ever saw at 924 Gilman (Jan. 11, 1991).
To give some color to the culture of things at that time: At the very first show I went to upon moving to CA, I met a girl about my age. She seemed very involved in the scene and after that 1st show, she sent me a cassette with all the hottest new hardcore bands on it. One band the girl turned me onto was Downcast. So, I went to see and take photos of Downcast with Born Against, The Hated, Grinch, and Econochrist. I had just moved from Salt Lake City and was only really used to ‘youth crew’ posi-core. The Bay Area scene was very different and I attribute that to my interest in varied strains of punk and my general radicalization.
Econochrist were a big part of Bay Area punk/hardcore in the 90’s. Over 20 years later, I am now friends with Ben, the guy in this photo. I love the Bay Area.
This photo was taken around 1994. This is Rex from Portraits of Past. This show took place at some house where someone from Rancid lived and, I think, featured in one of Rancid’s video. At the time, with Rancid’s newfound pop success, we all got a big kick out of it. I attended the show with a b-boy friend of mine who commented afterwards, “I was the only guy in there with a fade!”
